Importing a car from an EU country into Belgium
If you would like to purchase a car in another country within the European Union and register it in Belgium, you need to take several administrative steps into account. As an insurance broker, we are pleased to assist you in ensuring a smooth and correct start to your file.
What documents do you need?
For the import and registration of a vehicle from an EU country, the following documents are required:
-
purchase invoice or sales agreement
-
foreign registration certificate
-
certificate of conformity (COC), if available
-
identity card of the buyer
-
any additional documents depending on the vehicle or country of origin
What steps do you need to follow?
Customs clearance
As soon as you bring the vehicle into Belgium, you must declare it to customs. This can easily be done via the E705 application on MyMinfin under My Taxation. You can also declare the vehicle at a customs assistance office of your choice.
Pre-registration
To make the vehicle known in the DIV database, you can pre-register its technical data via the application: https://preregistration.mobilit.fgov.be/login
The data is taken from the foreign registration certificate. For this, you need an electronic identity card. This step is not mandatory for private individuals. If your vehicle is not pre-registered, your registration request must be processed by the DIV.
Technical inspection or conformity procedure
Only required if you are importing a vehicle that is not registered in your name. The vehicle must be presented at an inspection centre for a used vehicle inspection or an administrative inspection, depending on the vehicle category.
Present the foreign registration certificate. You will receive an application form for registration. Depending on the vehicle type, specific instructions apply for completing the form.
Take out car insurance
A valid Belgian insurance policy is required for registration. We are happy to assist you with fast and correct coverage.
Apply for registration
Once all required documents have been received, the registration application in Belgium can be started.
Taxes and charges
Depending on the region, taxes such as road tax and registration tax may apply.
Important to know
The exact procedure may differ depending on:
-
country of origin
-
age of the vehicle
-
new or second-hand vehicle
-
technical specifications
-
place of residence of the owner
